Struts weigh about twelve pounds for a 16 door.
How many struts on a double garage door.
Doors over 10 feet wide usually have at least one strut across the top of the top section.
If you ve got a double garage door you might have seen a u shaped steel bar attached to the door well this is your reinforcement strut.
A 16 wood door requires at least three struts but steel doors often need only one.
Three struts are also required for double garage doors especially if they are made with gauge steel.
If your double wide garage door is a steel door one should be ok.
We also recommend that you screw reinforcement struts on with hinges rather than holding them on with steel clips.
However we can tell you that heavier doors made from wood and metal can sometimes need up to two support struts per panel.
If you add two struts it will cause your door to be out of balance.
On double wide doors made of 25 or 26 gauge steel we recommend three struts one across the tops of the bottom and top sections and one in the middle of the door centered between the other two struts.
We generally suggest that you have 3 reinforcement struts installed this number may be increased to 4 if you have decorative windows in the top section of your garage door.
If you have a heavy garage door that has only a single strut on panels then you could be in for sagging problems in the future.
One should be installed on the top panel and one on the bottom.
A 16 wood door should have 3 or more struts but insulated steel doors should have at least two.
