Horsehair roofing felt.
Roofing felt is comprised of a base made from natural materials such as wood cellulose or synthetic ones such as fiberglass or polyester and then coated or saturated with a protective coating such as bitumen asphalt which repels water but still allows the product to breathe.
Traditional roof designs evolved largely in response to local climatic conditions and the building materials and skills available although they were also much infl uenced by local practice regulations wealth.

Horsehair is the long coarse hair growing on the manes and tails of horses it is used for various purposes including upholstery brushes the bows of musical instruments a hard wearing fabric called haircloth and for horsehair plaster a wallcovering material formerly used in the construction industry and now found only in older buildings.
Holes in roofing felt are quite common here we repair a hole in some roofing felt that is underneath the tiled roof.
We now have roofing felt plastic roofing sheeting.
Some of the oldest type of roof types we remove still have wooden pegs securing the slates long before nails were used.
Progressing from this a sarking type board would be fitted with horsehair felt then slates applied.
